Apiaries and vegetable garden have brought back a species at risk to the Trois Rivières plant in Canada.

This is the story of an initiative that benefits everyone because it protects biodiversity.

In 2021, Laurent Dudoit, our director of the corner division in Canada, proposes to put apiaries on the Trois-Rivières site. The bee plays a major role in pollination and therefore the harvest of fruits and vegetables used to feed us. With this in mind, it is also necessary to plant near the plant trees and plants intended to offer bees a varied food necessary for their survival. In 2022, our employees were able to enjoy the honey of a first harvest.

And the story could have ended there.

But Laurent Dudoit is a true nature enthusiast and the seduced people have so well appropriated the approach, that they propose the creation of a community vegetable garden. The association La Brouette then accompanies them to prepare the soil, create enclosures, sow and maintain. Then in spring 2023, the first harvest offers a unique friendly time to all those who participated in its construction.

And no one expected a curious visitor…

Yet, it is indeed the Monarque butterfly, the best known butterfly in North America, added in 2003 to the list of species at risk, which has taken up residence here, on the Trois-Rivières site in Canada.

This butterfly protects many pollinators and its importance is crucial for biodiversity, so that there is cross-border cooperation (Canada/US/Mexico) because it is the only butterfly to migrate from one part of the continent to another.

Beyond the very positive aspect of the Abzac group’s CSR and inclusion policy, it is also for us the best proof that an industry can carry out its activities cleanly, while preserving its environment and encouraging biodiversity.

We thank Laurent and above all, we are proud to contribute to this kind of initiative.
